A Work in Progress edition by Nancy Shew Bolton Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Nancy Bolton serves up a satisfying romance with ‘A Work in Progress.’
She whets our appetites with a study in contrasts—Julie views life with exuberance and quiet generosity, Mark with anxiety and prickly reserve.
Ms. Bolton tosses in some engaging minor players like Chris, the untidy, smoking, gum-chewing chef and a valiant little boy trying to care for his war-wounded father.
We get just a soupçon of parental wisdom, a few spicy kisses, and the fragrant aroma of good deeds done in secret.
Then the author brings on the meaty heart of the story.
Just when Mark and Julie think they have each other figured out, the complexities of human nature rear up and the relationship goes on the rocks. They need to work through challenges and misunderstandings and some near-heartbreak before we reach the sweet resolution.
‘A Work in Progress’ delivers its message that ‘love does not boast’ with subtlety and depth. I recommend that you don’t read it hungry, though.
The cast of characters from Nancy Bolton’s, "A Work In Progress," seems bound to involve us in the individual stories of their lives, ‘til with one broad-palette-knife-stroke across the canvas of her novel Ms. Bolton blends their lives into a riveting tale of sorrows and trials, laced with underlying love, joy, and hope in the journey.
Rarely do I read a book that plumbs the depths of my conscience and causes me to ask “How do I apply what I’ve just read to my life?” But," A Work In Progress" does just that. In the affluent society in which we live, we’ve all become snobs, as Julie labels Mark. Snobs absorbed in our own lives, unaware of the countless needy people around us. But Ms. Bolton snatches the blinders off and sweeps us into real lives, needs, and passions we ignore.
Most certainly she’s not going to leave us at the titillating end of this book. She weaves an intriguing, yet realistic, story—a passionate love story—that screams for a series or at least a sequel. Great story. Great read. Great Book. With the promise of more to come from this very talented author and story teller? I certainly hope so.
First of all I received this book in exchange for an honest review, and here it is! This book is highly recommended. It contained many of my favorite elements food, good deeds, judgement, misunderstanding, conflicting interests, and a clean Christian romance. I like to read stories that are inspired by the author's love of God. Some people may not, but that is my favorite genre, God! This is an emotional rollercoaster that is worth the ride!
First of all, Julie and Mark's lives seem to be intertwined or as I would call it fate that only God Himself could construct. Mark doesn't know any of her friends, and she does not know any of his friends because all they are to each other are employees that work in the kitchen at the same restaurant. Julie's impression of Mark is that he is a player, and is afraid of commitment. Mark believes that Julie is cold towards him. As the book starts out Mark is having an anxiety attack, and he does not know what is happening to him, so he stops by the free clinic, and meets a boy named Casey and his Father Kevin. Kevin just so happens to be Julie's high school crush. However after years of longing for Kevin she loses the thought of him as a boyfriend or husband, and just loves him as a friend after Casey is born. Julie is a good Christian girl, but like many of us, she soon realizes that she is not behaving very Christian towards Mark, and sets out to change her ways because she is not leading the example of Jesus. However, Mark leaves his phone at work one night and sees her with left over food that was going to be thrown away, and containers like they use at the restaurant. The employees think that she is giving the left over bones to her dog. He sets out to see if she is stealing from the company. I love the main story, which is that restaurants waste a lot of food, and just throw it away, but Julie wants to keep the discarded food for a good and noble purpose to feed people who can't afford food for themselves. Honestly I wish all restaurants did this because there are so many homeless people and people who are less fortunate that can't afford food a majority of the time. There are two terms in this book, gleaning and dumpster diving. I agreed with Julie, dumpster diving is so derogatory. Her mission to feed the poor is her passion, and how dare anyone judge her for that. Needless to say Julie is behaving differently towards Mark, and Mark is behaving differently towards Julie, but for very different reasons. What relationship will develop between these two people, whom appear to be polar opposites? There are many factors that pull them together, but will their fears tear them apart or bring them together. I was turning page after page to see what was going to happen. This book had twists that I could not predict. I love the way the author wrote this book! It is very enjoyable without being preachy, so even if you don't want to read a Christian book, it is a nice contemporary story that you will enjoy!
I can't give too much of the story line away because I want you to read this story. It makes you think real hard about what are you doing to help the less fortunate, and what are you taking for granted that another person would feel blessed just to have. How would you feel being judged based on gossip. It ruins many potential relationships. You should get to know a person before you judge them.
I look forward to the author's current and future books! I absolutely loved everything about this book. I admire your work, and pray that people who read it will be more open to helping others as Jesus asks us to do!
I had trouble getting into the story because I couldn't tell where it was going. But the writing was excellent
Very good reading, while introducing and presenting issues of hunger that are often overlooked. The author competently depicted young adults and many of the issues that they face in jobs, interpersonal relationships, relating to God, and issues from the past.
I love this story, especially the intimate view of each character's inner life, which is a hallmark of Nancy Shew Bolton's writing. She has a talent for guiding us deeply into the thinking and motivations for each person's responses, feelings, and choices. Then when her protagonists connect in a scene together, you can feel the fireworks of all that is going on from the core of truth for each one. Also, I so admire the subtheme of freeganism (very cool). A lot to hold your interest, and the characters are believable and engaging. I highly recommend this entertaining, thoughtful book!
